Introduction to Tarantulas
Tarantulas are a well known family of big spiders that, despite their size, are relatively harmless creatures. Tarantulas almost never bite humans and their bite is comparable in pain to a bee sting. They’re an incredibly interesting animal and keeping tarantulas as a pet has become an increasingly more popular hobby.
Tarantulas (Theraphosidae) are arachnids and a subclass of the Mygalomorphae. There’s about a thousand different tarantula species.
Where do tarantulas live
Tarantulas have spread all around the world and can be found in both North and South America, Asia, Africa and even some southern parts of Europe. Most tarantulas live in a tropical habitat.
Tarantulas live both in deserts and forests, in humid and desolate biomes and on mountains as well as in lowlands.
Tarantula as a pet
Keeping tarantulas as a pet can be a wildly interesting hobby for anyone interested in biology, or just in having a pet that is a bit more outlandish than dogs and cats.
Taking care of your tarantula is quite easy as these animals don’t require much of your time. It is important to realise that keeping a tarantula as a pet is a long term commitment though, as they can live anywhere from 5 to 20 years, depending on the species and the gender.
To start keeping tarantulas as a pet, you don’t need a lot of equipment. It boils down to finding a suitable terrarium for your tarantula, making sure it has enough water, and feeding your tarantula the right food.
